Ford India Counts Big on Indian Market

Ford India recently got an approval for investing $500 million for setting up Indian operations and their further expansion. The parent company Ford Motors faced economic crisis and did not file for bankruptcy. Ford India is quite eager to enter the small car market in India where it currently lacks presence.

According to Ford India, the Indian operations did not receive any distress calls from either Ford Motors in US or Ford Asian center operations in Bangkok. The company had already announced investments worth $500 million earlier and there was no intimation to the Indian operations to hold them back. The company still sticks to its original plans for India as there had been considerable slow down in the market but definitely no meltdown like the other markets.

Ford considers the small car launch to be a critical part of its overall strategy to grab larger market share and strengthen its presence in India. Ford intends to retain its brand image in India thus will go ahead with its original plans. Having a small car in India is a necessity to be present here successfully.

Audi is going to Increases its Sales Force in India

Audi is eyeing the Indian market seriously and intends to grab a larger market share by competing fiercely with its competitors like Mercedes and BMW. BMW has already surpassed Mercedes in sales figures in India. Now Audi intends to do the same. It is geared up to increase its dealership networks in India with an intention to grab at least 30 percent market share in India by the year 2011. Its current market share is 20 percent in India in the luxury car segment. Terming their growth in the country as sustainable. In the last five months alone the company have grown by 57 per cent.

Currently they have 11 dealerships in major cities. They will be soon appointing new dealers in Lucknow, Jaipur, Coimbatore and Nagpur. Jubilant Motors from Bangalore has entered into a partnership with Audi for appointing dealers in South India. Jubilant Motors already has a showroom in Bangalore and its Chennai showroom will be operational by early 2010. They have invested close to Rs. 12 crore for the Chennai dealership.

Expansion of Pre-Owned Cars Business - General Motors

General Motors India intends to increase its used-car business five fold in India by the end of this year. It owns 11 Chevrolet-OK as its pre-owned car retail outlets and intends to increase the strength of these outlets to up to at least 50. It also has 203 dealers in India which it intends to increase up to 250 by the end of this year. At present, there are 203 outlets of General Motors across the country. Further it get to be expand by more 250 outlets by the end of this financial year.

General Motors extending the same 3-year/one lakh km warranty to used-car owners as well. Though they have not set target for used-cars, but the sale of used cars should not be less than 40 per cent of the new car sales at an outlet. All the used cars at dealerships in India will undergo a history check as well as go through 110-point check list by GM India trained engineers.

The wholly owned Indian subsidiary of the American auto giant seems to be facing trouble in raising money to complete its engine plant in India. Its parent company has already filed bankruptcy in the US and is not much of help for its troubles. Earlier Reilly had stated that it faced problems in raising USD 200 million funds earmarked for its engine plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra. GM India also intends to increase its dealership network to rural and sem-urban Indian cities as well.

You have to wait for Fiat Bravo

Fiat India has postponed the launch of its upcoming model, Fiat Bravo, in India. Fiat intends to rebuild its brand in the country and the launch of Bravo was a part of the marketing strategy. However, looking at the present car scenario, it had postponed its decision to launch any high priced car. It states that there is clearly a lack of interest for car priced above Rs. 20 lakh. They have taken this decision due to poor market conditions.

Fiat Bravo will be imported as a completely built unit in India and would have attracted hundred percent duty on the same. The market is not viable for such highly priced cars. Fiat already marks its presence in the Indian auto market with its models like Fiat 500 Cinqcento and Fiat Linea. Fiat 500 which is a three door hatchback model is already priced at Rs. 13 lakh and above due to the import duty it attracts in India. It intends to launch Fiat Grand Punto on 17th of this month. Moreover, Fiat does not intend to launch models in the same segment that would compete with each other or with the Tata Motors portfolio.
