M&M Make up a U-Turn to Africa

Mahindra and Mahindra is focusing its sales strategies towards the African market. The US market is still severely hit by the recessionary trends and the automobile sales have failed to pick up in recent past. The company now aims to sell its model more rigorously in the upcoming markets including those in Africa.

M&M is also setting up small manufacturing units in Africa and will export semi-knock down units from India. It is mainly aiming at markets like Ghana, Nigeria and Zambia and intends to sell utility vehicles and tractors as nearly one-third of the tractors sold in Africa are imported. There is a propensity among buyers in Africa to be brand loyal and that works in our favour,” said Anjanikumar Choudhari, president of M&M’s farm equipment business.

Tractors from M&M are more technically sound and the company has managed to sell nearly 1600 tractors so far in these markets. It now aims to gear up its strategies to market its products more competitively in these markets.

M&M already marks a strong presence in India in tractor and utility vehicle segment. It is not strengthening its positions in the Australian, American and the African nations. It is also increasing its presence in China where it has two ventures with ancheng Tractors and Mahindra China Tractor.

More Powerful Engine of Maruti Grand Vitara

Because of falling sales of its SUV Grand Vitara, Maruti is now planning to re-launch the vehicle with a better engine of 2400cc. Current model of Grand Vitara, GV 2.4 is priced at around Rs. 14 lakh but the new model is expected to be priced a little higher than the existing one. The new model will compete against Toyota’s Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero, Hyundai Tucson, GM’s Captiva and Ford Endeavour in India.

There is no official word so far from the company regarding the re-launch of the SUV model. However, sources close to the project revealed that the new Grand Vitara is expected next month.

Grand Vitara is the third generation SUV from Maruti Suzuki and its sales fell to 270 unit in calendar year 2009 from 795 units in the same period last year. SUVs account for sale of nearly 25,000 annually in India. The new model may also carry cosmetic changes in the exteriors as well as changes in the interiors of the car.

Ford India Counts Big on Indian Market

Ford India recently got an approval for investing $500 million for setting up Indian operations and their further expansion. The parent company Ford Motors faced economic crisis and did not file for bankruptcy. Ford India is quite eager to enter the small car market in India where it currently lacks presence.

According to Ford India, the Indian operations did not receive any distress calls from either Ford Motors in US or Ford Asian center operations in Bangkok. The company had already announced investments worth $500 million earlier and there was no intimation to the Indian operations to hold them back. The company still sticks to its original plans for India as there had been considerable slow down in the market but definitely no meltdown like the other markets.

Ford considers the small car launch to be a critical part of its overall strategy to grab larger market share and strengthen its presence in India. Ford intends to retain its brand image in India thus will go ahead with its original plans. Having a small car in India is a necessity to be present here successfully.

Audi is going to Increases its Sales Force in India

Audi is eyeing the Indian market seriously and intends to grab a larger market share by competing fiercely with its competitors like Mercedes and BMW. BMW has already surpassed Mercedes in sales figures in India. Now Audi intends to do the same. It is geared up to increase its dealership networks in India with an intention to grab at least 30 percent market share in India by the year 2011. Its current market share is 20 percent in India in the luxury car segment. Terming their growth in the country as sustainable. In the last five months alone the company have grown by 57 per cent.

Currently they have 11 dealerships in major cities. They will be soon appointing new dealers in Lucknow, Jaipur, Coimbatore and Nagpur. Jubilant Motors from Bangalore has entered into a partnership with Audi for appointing dealers in South India. Jubilant Motors already has a showroom in Bangalore and its Chennai showroom will be operational by early 2010. They have invested close to Rs. 12 crore for the Chennai dealership.
