Toyota's Land Cruiser On Indian Roads

Toyota launched the full-size, heavy duty Land Cruiser V8 in India today. It is Toyota's first V8 diesel on sale here. The Land Cruiser Prado has been on sale in India for some time, but it was available only with a 4.4-litre petrol engine.

There are two variant available, both will come with no less than ten airbags. Priced at Rs 83.1 lakh (ex-showroom Thane) for the fullly-specced version that features a 6-disc DVD player, 14-speaker audio system from JBL, 4-zone climate control with 28 vents. There is also a lower spec variant priced at Rs 81.64 lakh.

The Land Cruiser has a ladder-frame chassis rather than the monocoque construction that modern SUVs have increasingly turned to. Toyota claims this to be an affirmation of the Land Cruiser’s genuine off-road credentials, and it also makes it far easier to repair in those parts of the world without access to laser-aligned body-shop rigs. This in many ways makes up for its relatively higher price tag compared to the luxury "soft-roaders" like the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes M-Class.

Powering the 2,555kg Cruiser is a 4.5-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel. The engine is fitted with low-intertia turbochargers and common-rail injection to deliver a peak power output of 282bhp and a massive 66kgm of torque, available from just 1600rpm. Drive is supplied to all four wheels via a standard-fit six-speed automatic gearbox (with the option of manual override) plus a torque-sensing centre differential that can smoothly vary the amount of torque between the front and rear axles to promote stability.

The difference can be locked, and low-range gears selected, via switches on the dashboard. The Land Cruiser uses conventional steel springs, but hydraulically charged shock absorbers allow the ride height to be varied by up to 100mm and also give three-stage variable damping.

Because of its legendary reliability, it’s the preffered mode of transport in places as diverse as the Australian outback, remote parts of Africa and the high-streets of London, so it should have no problems coping with our conditions.

Why I like Maruti 800?

"Maruti 800 ruled out from the roads" ..... "Maruti 800 comes in new complexion" and many other news I have heard in recent days. Whatever the reason but still I like Maruti 800. Yeah! It is true. Any middle class family who earn 4 to 4.5 lacs per annum can buy this dream car even though, it has 796 cc Engine, Petrol, Manual Transmission, 4 Seater, No Power Windows, No Central Locking , 13.1 km/liter City Mileage.

It is a very nice compact car for a small family. Hassle free, no problems with maintenance as its cheaper, we get parts easily, no other make can fail this car as it has become the choice of all. Its too beautiful comfort of ordinary family. No comparison to this wonderful car for small family (unit). It is most unbeatable non competitive piece on road. It is most realistic car for the Indian roads. Yeah! It is very handy and reliable even though, its seat cushions unimproved for long distance travel.

Yeah! I like Maruti 800 and its next generation Maruti Alto - Lxi. See what happens next.

What is "Bharat IV Emission Norms"?

Many times we have read in news paper that some of the vehicles are going to be outdated due to not qualify with Bharat IV Emission Norms. What does it means actually?

Emissions standards are requirements that set specific limits to the amount of pollutants that can be released into the environment. Many emissions standards focus on regulating pollutants released by automobiles (motor cars) and other powered vehicles but they can also regulate emissions from industry, power plants, small equipment such as lawn mowers and diesel generators. Frequent policy alternatives to emissions standards are technology standards (which mandate the use of a specific technology) and emission trading.

Standards generally regulate the emissions of NOx, sulfur oxides, particulate matter (PM) or soot, carbon monoxide (CO), or volatile hydrocarbons.

The first Indian emission regulations were idle emission limits which became effective in 1989. These idle emission regulations were soon replaced by mass emission limits for both petrol (1991) and diesel (1992) vehicles, which were gradually tightened during the 1990’s. Since the year 2000, India started adopting European emission and fuel regulations for four-wheeled light-duty and for heavy-dc. Indian own emission regulations still apply to two- and three-wheeled vehicles.

Current requirement is that all transport vehicles carry a fitness certificate that is renewed each year after the first two years of new vehicle registration.

On October 6, 2003, the National Auto Fuel Policy has been announced, which envisages a phased program for introducing Euro 2 - 4 emission and fuel regulations by 2010. The implementation schedule of EU emission standards in India is summarized in below table (Click to Enlarge).

The above standards apply to all new 4-wheel vehicles sold and registered in the respective regions. In addition, the National Auto Fuel Policy introduces certain emission requirements for interstate buses with routes originating or terminating in Delhi or the other 10 cities.

For 2-and 3-wheelers, Bharat Stage II (Euro 2) will be applicable from April 1, 2005 and Stage III (Euro 3) standards would come in force preferably from April 1, 2008, but not later than April 1, 2010.

Mahindra's New Scorpio: A Powerful Automotive Vehicle

Yeah! It is Mahindra's New Scorpio - A Powerful Automotive Vehicle. I know one question may rose in your mind that what is the thing that everyone can say it too powerful? The reason is, its 2.6-litre CRDe engine has been replaced by the advanced 2.2-litre mHawk engine on all variants. This makes the Scorpio the first model that complies not just with Bharat III but also with the yet to be implemented Bharat IV emission norms. When we are talking about going green, the top of the line VLX variant is available with a micro hybrid system. Revving the mHawk engine , through City traffic and on open roads , is a pleasure as the advanced mill is far more responsive and generates an impressive amount of torque as compared to the CRDe motor.

The start-stop hybrid system has ameliorated and operates smoothly. Even on standby mode, the A/C functions full blast. The moment you want to move on , the transition is smooth and responsive. M&M’s Micro Hybrid technology , developed with support from BOSCH, allows the engine to switch into standby mode when not required thus conserving fuel. It automatically detects moments during the drive when the vehicle is idle and switches off the engine. This technology is available on the VLX and the M2DI variants of the Scorpio. The start-stop system can get slightly annoying to people who are generally impatient , like me. I had to switch off the Micro Hybrid technology exactly seven minutes from the time I started driving. Yes , I feel guilty as I might have burned more fuel but it was way too much fun!

Here are some of the similarities that the new Scorpio carries over from the XYLO like the gear knob, however, it could have been a little more stylish. Other features like the Park Assist are a great help especially for a vehicle of this size. The dashboard looks neat and comes equipped with a 2-DIN audio system and new interiors. Our car sported black interiors which were not too impressive but the tan and beige option looks far better. The digital immobilizer is also a new feature which we wanted to see in the Scorpio for some time now. We are sure that M&M can foretell that many potential Scorpio buyers might opt for the XYLO simply because of the latter’s brilliant pricing. To avoid that , the firm has slashed the Scorpio’s price by Rs 34 , 000 to Rs 70 , 000 depending on the variant.
