Toyota i-ROAD concept

Automakers increasingly are turning to electric vehicles to offer buyers zero-emissions mobility, but four-wheeled EVs can be heavy and expensive, and they can’t slice through urban centers any better than regular cars. Toyota thinks it has a solution, and it’s called the i-ROAD. The small, three-wheeled electric-powered concept is something of a cross between a car, a motorcycle, and a fancy golf cart, and Toyota refers to it as a personal mobility vehicle.

i-ROAD Is i-Clever

On paper, the i-ROAD might not seem as cool as conventionally powered three-wheelers such as Morgan’s 3-Wheeler, but it’s actually quite innovative. The i-ROAD seats two passengers in tandem to keep the body as narrow as possible; it measures just 33.5 inches wide, 56.9 inches high, and 92.5 inches long. That’s just a bit more than half the width of a Smart Fortwo Electric Drive, and Toyota claims that the i-ROAD is no wider than a two-wheeler. Toyota must be referring to some of the beefier bikes, but either way, the concept is skinny.

Besides offering hypothetical urban customers a tight, motorcycle-like footprint, the i-ROAD also gives them protection from the elements. Featuring a fully enclosed body—bettering BMW’s odd C1 scooter, which had only a roof panel—the i-ROAD makes a far better foul-weather proposition than a regular motorcycle or even the Morgan or Can-Am Spyder. Toyota says that because the i-ROAD’s passenger cell is fully enclosed, no helmet is necessary—a critical point for the hair-style sensitive. The closed body also means the driver cannot stick his or her foot out to steady the i-ROAD when at rest, so Toyota gave the concept a trick front-wheel setup that keeps it upright without human help.

Toyota calls the i-ROAD’s self-righting front-wheel gadgetry Active Lean technology, and it consists of a geared actuator affixed to each front wheel’s suspension arm. A computer manages the degree of lean of each front wheel—as the angle of lean of one wheel increases, the other lowers by the same amount—using steering angle, a gyroscope, and vehicle speed to induce lean in corners or keep the i-ROAD steady at low speeds. The system also can filter out potentially balance-upsetting road imperfections when traveling in a straight line. The i-ROAD is steered using a squircle-shaped steering wheel rather than a set of handlebars.

i-ROAD, Therefore i-Zero Emissions

If you thought the i-ROAD’s front-wheel setup couldn’t get any more involving or interesting—from a technical standpoint, at least—prepare to be further wowed. The i-ROAD is actually front-wheel drive, and no power goes to the rear wheel. Each front wheel features a 2.7-hp in- hub electric motor powered by a shared lithium-ion battery that offers a claimed driving range of 30 miles. Toyota says battery top-offs take just three hours when fed by a “conventional domestic power supply,” but doesn’t indicate which domestic power standard—Japanese, European, or U.S.—is being cited.

There aren’t many exciting electric cars out there right now—excepting Tesla’s quick and attractive Model S—but we’re genuinely tickled by this Toyota concept. It looks cool, and we’re inclined to believe Toyota’s press-release hyperbole regarding the i-ROAD’s “unique driving experience.” We foresee the i-ROAD having far more success in Europe and Japan than here, though, if it ever were to go into production, thanks to the variously tight parking conditions, congested urban centers, and strict emissions regulations. Too bad. Because while the i-ROAD has one less wheel than a Prius, it’s at least three times more interesting.

Toyota's Land Cruiser On Indian Roads

Toyota launched the full-size, heavy duty Land Cruiser V8 in India today. It is Toyota's first V8 diesel on sale here. The Land Cruiser Prado has been on sale in India for some time, but it was available only with a 4.4-litre petrol engine.

There are two variant available, both will come with no less than ten airbags. Priced at Rs 83.1 lakh (ex-showroom Thane) for the fullly-specced version that features a 6-disc DVD player, 14-speaker audio system from JBL, 4-zone climate control with 28 vents. There is also a lower spec variant priced at Rs 81.64 lakh.

The Land Cruiser has a ladder-frame chassis rather than the monocoque construction that modern SUVs have increasingly turned to. Toyota claims this to be an affirmation of the Land Cruiser’s genuine off-road credentials, and it also makes it far easier to repair in those parts of the world without access to laser-aligned body-shop rigs. This in many ways makes up for its relatively higher price tag compared to the luxury "soft-roaders" like the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes M-Class.

Powering the 2,555kg Cruiser is a 4.5-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel. The engine is fitted with low-intertia turbochargers and common-rail injection to deliver a peak power output of 282bhp and a massive 66kgm of torque, available from just 1600rpm. Drive is supplied to all four wheels via a standard-fit six-speed automatic gearbox (with the option of manual override) plus a torque-sensing centre differential that can smoothly vary the amount of torque between the front and rear axles to promote stability.

The difference can be locked, and low-range gears selected, via switches on the dashboard. The Land Cruiser uses conventional steel springs, but hydraulically charged shock absorbers allow the ride height to be varied by up to 100mm and also give three-stage variable damping.

Because of its legendary reliability, it’s the preffered mode of transport in places as diverse as the Australian outback, remote parts of Africa and the high-streets of London, so it should have no problems coping with our conditions.

Specifications of Toyota Land Cruiser:

1. Price: Rs 81.64 lakhs to Rs 83.1 lakhs
2. Engine: 4461cc, V-8 diesel
3. Max Power: 282bhp at 3600rpm
4. Max Torque: 66.2kgm at 1600rpm
5. Valve gear: 4 per cylinder
6. Front Suspension: Double Wishbone
7. Rear Suspension: 4-link coil with lateral rod
8. Steering: Rack and Pinion
9. Brakes (front): 340 x 32mm, ventilated discs
10. Brakes (rear): 345 x 18mm, ventilated discs
11. Wheels: 18-inch alloy
12. Tyres (front): 285/60-R18
13. Tyres (rear): 285/60-R18

Global Car Majors to Follow Maruti Route

Global carmakers looking to the blasting Indian car market to relieve their destinies are planning to simulate Maruti Suzuki’s plan of action of establishing hatchback and sedan variants of the same model, as they research ways to cut costs.

Maruti’s Dzire, the highest selling sedan in the country, builds upon its origin to another best-seller, the Swift hatchback. Now companies like the world’s largest carmaker Toyota, Europe’s largest car maker Volkswagen, Japan’s Honda and America’s Ford Motor plan to use the same technology to make both hatchbacks and sedans for their future launches in India.

Toyota’s will use its small car platform, Yaris, to launch a small and a big car in India next year. Volkswagen’s small car Polo as well as Ford’s new small car will have additional sedan variants.

Dzire, priced at Rs 4.6 lakh - 6.7 lakh (diesel and petrol) sold 60,000 units in the last financial year, and some of its variants have a delivery lag of over two month owing to high bookings.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s deputy MD for marketing Sundeep Singh says that the company hopes to achieve its sales target in the country with the twin hatchback-sedan strategy. “We have already begun ground work for the small car. While the premium hatchback is for customers upgrading from entry-level cars, the sedan will target customers wanting a bigger car,’’ he says.

Volkswagen, after launching Passat and Jetta sedans in India, will add a third sedan based on the Polo platform. Its main model under the same brand will be a hatchback. “India will be the only market where both versions of the Polo will be made available. Both cars will be positioned in a way to avoid competing with Skoda Fabia,” said Jorg Muller, Volkswagen India president and managing director. The hatchback will be launched later this year and the sedan version will follow after few months.

Auto analysts tracking the Indian market said that as competition intensifies in India, manufacturers will find ways to cut costs and multi-product platforms will be used to remain competitive. “Dzire is just the beginning and we will see many more companies rolling out two or more cars from a single platform,” says Mohit Arora, senior director, JD Power Asia Pacific.

Honda Siel Cars India has gone a step ahead to launch two different cars from a single platform. Its soon-to-be-launched premium small car, Jazz, will be based on the Honda City platform.
